What You Need to Know About Sabril® (vigabatrin)

Sabril is a branded prescription medication that was approved in the U.S. in August of 2009.

Sabril is a prescription medicine used with other treatments in adults and children 10 years of age and older with refractory complex partial seizures (CPS) who have not responded well enough to several other treatments and if the possible benefits outweigh the risk of vision loss. Sabril should not be the first medicine used to treat CPS.

Sabril is a prescription medicine used in babies, 1 month to 2 years old, with infantile spasms (IS), if the possible benefits outweigh the possible risk of vision loss.

All people who take Sabril are at risk for vision loss with any amount of Sabril. The risk of vision loss may be higher the more Sabril you take daily and the longer you take it. It is not possible for your healthcare provider to know when vision loss will happen. It could happen soon after starting Sabril or any time during treatment. It may even happen after treatment has stopped.

Please see additional Important Safety Information, including Boxed Warning for risk of permanent vision loss below.

Ask for Sabril by Name

If you prefer to continue on brand-name Sabril, consult with your doctor and ask for Sabril to be specified in your prescription with the term "Dispense as Written (DAW)" or other terms required under state law. Depending on your insurance coverage, there may be differences in cost if you and your doctor choose a brand-name prescription.

Check Your Prescription

If you have been prescribed brand-name Sabril, the pharmacy may fill your prescription with a generic vigabatrin instead of the brand-name Sabril that your doctor has prescribed.

A generic version can look very similar to the brand-name medicine.

Check your medicine when you receive it to determine if you have been given brand-name Sabril as prescribed by your doctor.
